This info is according to our trip on 5-6/03: There are 2 bus companies in Cuba: Astro and Viazul.

Viazul has better buses and costs about 20% more than Astro. Also, Astro has an unpredicted timetable and buses are frequently canclled. You can do a whole trip in Cuba without using Astro. Viazul covers all tourist attractions (and more) with at least 1 bus a day for each destination. Try to buy your ticket in advance (especially in the high season).

The problem in Cuba is when you need to go to less touristic places like some villages and beaches. In this case, you can rely on other public transportation. The best thing to do is ask in your casa particular. Usually, there is a bus station for trucks and collectivos. They are active in the morning until early afternoon. Be aware: do not get stucked faraway from your city in the late afternoon. We did that mistake several times and saved by miracles! You can find yourself spending the night 100 km from your casa particular because you did not have transportation to return. Hitchiking is also problematic in Cuba in some places. The drivers are afraid to take tourists because of the police. Do not rely on it! You can always use a taxi which will take you and return you to the city. It is best to have at least 3 passangers to lower the costs. Bargain always for a better price.
